Center Street is the gateway to our island and the heart of our community, and the City is giving it a facelift! Many thanks to the Center Street Task Force (John Pence, Betty Minchew, Penny Travis, John Mcgee, William Hampton, Julie Hensley, and Dave Stormer; chaired by Councilman DJ Rich) for their hard work in studying Center Street and recommending improvements.
Engraved Brick Fundraiser
Want to leave your mark on Folly and help raise money for Center Street at the same time? Consider buying engraved bricks to honor your family, loved ones, pets, neighbors, and friends. The bricks will be laid in the newly-landscaped median between Ashley and Arctic and then along Center Street from City Hall to the Community Center. Bricks come in two sizes: 4×8 ($75) and 8×8 ($150). For more information and to purchase your brick, please visit the online purchase page: www.bricksrus.com/order/follybeachcenterstreet
Lane Changes on Center Street
The City is also working towards lane changes on Center Street. The proposed changes would get rid of the two narrow lanes in each direction and create one wider lane in each direction with a left turn lane running down the middle. The parking would remain the same. We hope the changes will improve the flow of traffic by taking turning cars out of the lanes of traffic and also improve pedestrian and vehicle safety.
Stantec Engineering and Consulting firm completed the Concept Plan, which was given preliminary approval by SCDOT. Stantec has now been awarded the contract to proceed with the engineering phase to study the lane change in more depth and submit final plans and permits to SCDOT. Once the engineering is complete, the City will go back out for bid for Phase 3, construction. Contractors will repave and restripe Center Street (a process called mill and overlay) hopefully beginning in the late fall.
