Folly Beach: All America City? Folly Beach has been named a finalist – one of 20 – in the prestigious All America Cities competition. Often called the Nobel Prize for civic accomplishment, the awards are given to only 10 communities each year. Only 12 South Carolina cities have ever received this award. Charleston’s city limit signs still mention the designation, even though the award was received in 1978. … [Read more...]

Mayor’s Message May 2013

I start this month’s article with a sad heart. We need to hold the families and friends of the Boston bombing victims in our thoughts and prayers. This was another reminder of how fragile our society is and how easily we can be devastated by evil behavior. And it’s a reminder of the price we pay for having an open society built on individual freedoms. Please also say a special prayer for the people of West Texas. The explosion there reminded us of the high price our first responders are … [Read more...]

sandspur20111106_24zb1

If you live on Folly Island, you’re probably within half a block of a mid-block “right-of-way,” but you may not know it. When Folly Beach streets were laid out in 1920, the planners added a 10-foot mid-block strip of public land connecting one avenue to the next. No one knows why – was it for fire hoses? Model T cut-throughs? Pedestrians? But the Planning Commission (PC) thinks the foresight of those planners can benefit residents today. … [Read more...]
