SANDSPUR – July 2012

Joanne Johnston, who has managed the Folly Beach Post Office for almost 20 years, will retire July 31st. Her successor has not been chosen. There are several applicants. Jennifer Gadsden will stay on as part-time clerk.

Mayor Tim Goodwin surprised her with a Proclamation at the June 26th Council meeting. He called her “An Individual Whose Smile and Service to the Community is Her Signature and Way of Life,” and said “the Folly Beach community will miss her service, her right answer to every question and the way she knew everyone by name.” Folly resident Retta Laurey, her aunt, tricked Johnston and her husband into coming to the Council meeting, claiming that Laurey was getting an award and wanted family to be there to see it.
